Why Your Overwhelmed Child Struggles With Executive Function: The Sensory Processing Connection


I started writing this blog because I was inspired by a young person I’m coaching right now; let's call them Alex, and by several others who've sat in my office and said the same thing, in different words: "I just want quiet time."

Alex expressed this with evident exhaustion. Their day starts at 7 am with school, followed by CCA, then tuition until 6 pm, after which they do homework before sleeping. There's no quiet time, no regulation, and no space to be still.


When I inquired about what could assist with focus, motivation, or managing time, Alex didn't request improved strategies, a different app, or an additional tutor. They simply asked for silence, time to do nothing, to let their nervous system settle.


Their parents believed they were avoiding, and the school thought they were disengaged. However, what I sensed was a child with a depleted nervous system.


I've noticed this pattern recur with various coaching clients. I've observed how adults often mistake exhaustion for attitude or dysregulation for defiance. This misunderstanding isn't helpful; in fact, it tends to worsen the situation.


So, I'm writing this for the parents and educators who are wondering why their student seems withdrawn, why school feels like a battle, and why "just pushing through" isn't working.


What I've come to understand is this. Many times, their attitude isn't the issue at all. There's something very real going on in how their brain receives and processes signals from the world around them, and it can be incredibly exhausting for them even before their day begins.


This really matters, not only for comfort but also for supporting learning, behaviour, and all those important executive function skills you're working on. It’s a small thing that can make a big difference!


Let's Start with What Sensory Processing Actually Is

Your brain continuously receives information from your five senses, along with additional sensory inputs that you might not typically consider: the sense of spatial orientation, the sense of balance, and the ability to perceive internal signals such as hunger or the need to use the restroom.


Sensory integration is the neurological process that arranges sensations from your body and surroundings, enabling effective interaction with the environment. It occurs automatically, without conscious thought.


When this process works smoothly, you can:

  • Notice when your shirt contacts your skin, then move on without dwelling on it.

  • Hear the air conditioning hum quietly in the background without paying it much mind.

  • Sense the smell of someone's lunch and let it fade without being overwhelmed.

  • Get dressed, move through a busy environment, concentrate in class, and still have energy for relationships and homework.


When sensory processing functions differently, keep in mind that it exists on a spectrum, and automatic filtering can fail. Your brain isn't simply ignoring background noise; details like the texture of your uniform matter. The cafeteria's smell can be distracting, and moving through crowded areas is mentally demanding.


Here's an important thing to remember: your child isn't trying to be difficult. They're putting in a lot of effort just to get through their day in that environment.


The Neuroscience: It's Not About Willpower

Sensory integration theory, developed by Dr A. Jean Ayres in the 1970s, is founded on principles of neuroscience and offers a structured framework for comprehending the contributions of sensory and motor foundations to human behaviour. The theory remains under ongoing development as neuroscience research uncovers further insights into brain processing of sensation.


Here's what we've learned: When someone has differences in sensory processing, it's not about choice or personality flaws. It's simply a neurological variation in how the brain interprets, filters, and reacts to sensory information. Some children's brains might over-register input, making everything feel too bright, loud, or scratchy. Others might under-register, needing more stimulation to feel


This isn't something that willpower alone can change. You can't simply "toughen up" your nervous system to ignore feelings that are bothering you; that's not how our neurology functions.


This Isn't Just About Neurodivergence

Before I continue, I want to make sure it's clear: sensory sensitivities aren’t just something that neurodivergent people experience. Lots of folks are naturally more sensitive to sensory input. Some children have always been "sensitive" kids, and many adults enjoy quiet spaces and soft textures. It’s completely normal to have these preferences.


Here's what I've observed: children and teens I work with who are neurodivergent (such as ADHD, autism, anxiety, or learning differences) often experience sensory sensitivities more intensely. Their filtering systems are less effective. They are more bothered by noise. Transitions are more challenging. Unanticipated changes in routine cause real distress.


This post is meant for anyone supporting a young person. If your child has been recognised as neurodivergent, or you think they might be, or if they're just the "sensitive" kid, this is especially for you.


The key insight: This is not about being "too sensitive" or needing to "toughen up." It's about how their nervous system is wired.


Why This Matters for Executive Function (This Is the Important Bit)

Here's why I'm writing this as an executive function coach.


Executive function, your amazing ability to plan, manage your time, regulate your emotions, stay attentive, switch between tasks smoothly, and follow through, relies on having a well-balanced nervous system. When you're overwhelmed, it's completely understandable that thinking clearly becomes difficult. Remember to be kind to yourself during those times.


If a child is sitting in an environment where:

  • The fluorescent lights are too bright

  • The background noise from other classes is constant

  • Their uniform is scratchy

  • The cafeteria smells overwhelming

  • They're trying to navigate a crowded hallway

...their brain's resources are going to regulation, not learning.


Their working memory is occupied. Their attention is fragmented. Their emotional regulation is already taxed before they've opened their first textbook. Their task initiation feels impossible because they're already depleted.


Research on sensory processing shows that regulation is key to learning and executive functions. From my coaching experience, I’ve noticed that when young people receive support for sensory regulation, they tend to find it easier to access the skills I aim to teach. This support makes a meaningful difference in their progress.

 

What Dysregulation Looks Like

Sensory dysregulation can show up differently in each child, and understanding these signs helps us support them better:

1.     Avoidance: Some kids might steer clear of certain spaces like the cafeteria, crowded areas, or specific rooms. They may skip activities that others enjoy and might say things feel "too much."

2.     Seeking: Others might be constantly moving, fidgeting, or looking for input, touching everything around them, making noise, or needing lots of stimulation.

3.     Overreaction: Sometimes, minor changes can cause big distress. For example, a missing homework book might feel like a crisis, or a different brand of cereal could lead to an outburst.

4.     Shutdown: Some children might quietly withdraw or seem flat, complying but not really engaging. They might seem "fine" one moment and not the next.

5.     Slowness in transitions: Moving from one thing to another can take a lot of time; getting ready for school, switching subjects, or shifting activities might feel impossible.

6.     Physical complaints: Headaches, tummy aches, and fatigue are common, often without any medical reason.


Recognising these signs allows us to build a warmer, more understanding environment where every child's unique needs are valued. Here's what adults might sometimes think: "They're being difficult. They're being dramatic. They need to just get on with it. They're lazy. They have attitude."


Here's what's really going on: Their nervous system is alerting them that the environment feels unsafe or overwhelming. Their body reacts to this signal, regardless of whether the threat is considered "real" by adult standards.


The feelings are real. The exhaustion is real. The overwhelm is real.


The Singapore Context: Where This Gets Amplified

I work in Singapore, and I’ve noticed how our unique environment really highlights the sensory challenges many face. It’s interesting to see how our surroundings shape these experiences, making it more important to understand and support each other.


School environments often come with some challenges. You might notice older air-con systems, fluorescent lighting, and limited space. Classrooms tend to be lively and busy, and during lunch, the cafeterias can get quite crowded. Moving between subjects means walking through bustling corridors. Our uniforms can sometimes feel a bit warm in the tropical heat, and most schools have no air-conditioning.


Getting to school often involves crowded buses, MRT trains during busy hours, or unexpected delays. For children with sensory sensitivities, this isn’t a quick or easy trip. It can take over an hour of managing crowds, noise, temperature shifts, and sensory input before they even get to school.


Tuition culture means that after school, many children head directly to tuition classes. This creates a busy schedule with many different environments, transitions, and sensory demands before they even get home. It often leaves little to no downtime or recovery time for the children.


Singapore's heat and humidity can really be intense. Clothes tend to stick, and skin often feels uncomfortable due to constant sweating. For children who are sensitive to tactile input, this can be quite overwhelming.


With busy schedules filled with school, tuition, enrichment activities, and family expectations, many children rarely get a moment of unstructured time. There's little opportunity to simply relax, find some quiet, or enjoy a peaceful transition from one activity to the next.


This is like a recipe for a young person who’s feeling dysregulated. No wonder homework battles feel so tough, bedtime becomes so challenging, and irritability is common—it's all connected.


We're asking them to regulate in an environment that's working against them


What You Can Do at Home

1. Create a Sensory-Aware Environment

Lighting: If your child struggles with bright light, consider trying warmer bulbs or dimmer switches in bedrooms and study areas. Many parents find that making this simple switch to warmer, dimmable lighting can make bedtime and homework time more comfortable. It's an easy and affordable change to try.

Soundscape: Many children find that white noise or background music helps them concentrate, while others do best in silence. You might notice what your child prefers. Some parents discover that noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs can be helpful. Creating a quiet corner in the house, maybe a cosy nook in their room or even a cupboard, can provide a special retreat where a young person can relax and focus.

Remember, Singapore homes can sometimes feel chilly due to strong air conditioning. To stay comfortable, layering is helpful (see the clothing section). Keep soft layers handy, like cosy cardigans, lightweight scarves, or blankets, so you can easily stay warm in different rooms.

Sensory tools can be helpful for many families. You might want to keep some accessible items in common areas and bedrooms to make things easier.

Consider trying some of these options:

Here are some helpful items that many children find comforting and useful

  • Fidget tools like spinners, cubes, and pop-its—some young people find these great for staying focused.

  • Weighted blankets or lap pads can provide a calming pressure.

  • Textured objects such as stress balls, silicone fidgets, or fabric squares are also good to hold.

  • A cosy pillow and mattress can make a big difference, as parents often share.

  • Resistance bands or therapy putty are useful too.

  • Depending on what helps your child feel most relaxed, consider trying compression clothing or body socks.


2. Explore Transition Support

Transitions can be hard for many nervous systems. Some approaches parents explore:

  • Some families find that using countdowns like saying, "We're leaving in 20 minutes, then 15, then 5"creates predictability without sounding nagging.

  • Having a visual schedule, such as a posted list of the day’s activities (like after school, snack time, tuition, then heading home), can make the day feel smoother and help prevent surprises.

  • Transition objects or rituals, like a playlist for car rides, a familiar comfort item, or a small ritual, can signal changes and bring a sense of calm.

  • If possible, adding some buffer time, like 10-15 minutes between activities, can help everything go more smoothly without rushing.


3. Consider Downtime and Recovery

When a young person appears to shut down after school, it’s usually not because they're being difficult; instead, their nervous system might be feeling drained. Here are some things parents might consider exploring to support them:

  • Some families establish a comforting routine, like arriving home, enjoying a snack, and then having quiet time, instead of jumping straight into homework or tutoring.

  • Asking, "Where do you want to be right now?" can be a gentler way to help your child regulate feelings than simply telling them what to do.

  • Different kids find recovery through different activities, perhaps a cool shower, lying down with soft textures, listening to music, or spending time outside in the shade.

  • Watching what seems to help your child feel reset can be so useful. If you can, try to keep at least one day or evening free from scheduled activities; what that looks like can be different for every family and situation, but it can be a wonderful way to provide some calm and space.

 

4. Communicate Differently About Sensory Experience

  • Instead of saying, "You're being difficult about getting dressed," try saying, "I notice you're frustrated with your shirt. What's bothering you, is it the texture, the fit, how it feels, or something else?" This way, you invite understanding and make the conversation gentler and more supportive.


  • Instead of saying, "You're overreacting about the cafeteria," you might want to consider saying, "I hear the cafeteria is really hard right now. Let's think about what we can change. Do you want to eat elsewhere tomorrow?" This way, your message sounds more understanding and encouraging, creating a more positive and supportive tone.


  • Instead of: "Stop complaining." Try: "That sounds hard. What would help?"


This approach gently opens space for gathering information instead of dismissing their experience. It also encourages noticing and talking about sensory needs, which many young people find helpful for understanding themselves better.


5. Explore Solutions Together

Asking questions like "What helps you feel calmer?" or "What makes things harder?" can really help you understand what your child is going through. If you could change one thing about mornings, what would it be?" is a wonderful way to connect and understand their feelings.


Your child often understands what helps their nervous system, even if they can't put it into words. Taking the time to listen and explore together rather than assuming you already know the answer can be truly beneficial.


When a young person feels that the cafeteria is overwhelming or the texture of their uniform is bothering them, exploring other options together, such as finding a different place to eat or trying different layers, can really make a positive impact. This kind of teamwork not only helps them feel supported but also encourages them to become more aware of their needs and to work towards solutions. These experiences are great for developing important skills like executive function, making them feel more confident and empowered.


The Real Why: Executive Function Depends on Regulation

Sensory integration challenges happen when the brain has a harder time processing and combining different sensations. This can make it tricky to respond appropriately, which might affect learning and behaviour. Understanding this can help us be more supportive and patient.


This means that when a young person's nervous system is busy trying to handle overwhelming sensory input, it can make learning and behaviour a bit more challenging. It's important to understand that this isn't because the child is lacking in ability, but because their brain is mainly focused on dealing with the overwhelm rather than on learning.


Research on sensory processing shows that when we help young people regulate their senses, they often experience better focus, improved learning, and more positive behaviour.


Instead of wondering, "Why is my child so sensitive?" you might find it helpful to think, "What does my child's nervous system need to feel more settled? What could help?" This shift in perspective can open new avenues for understanding and support.


Based on my coaching experiences, I’ve noticed that when these questions help the focus shift toward understanding and support, positive changes often follow, whether in their learning, their willingness to try, or in your relationship with them.
